Fresh from the farm

If you want fresh, local made produce, the farmer’s market in 1905 has everything you need

Every Saturday from 9am to 12.30 pm, a dozen vendors set up fresh, local made produce at tables in the grounds of the 1905 restaurant. If you happen to be one of the late-comers, there is a good chance you’ll be leaving empty handed as the place gets packed within an hour of opening and the products start to disappear from the stalls. Started by French citizens Francois Driard and Christine Regnier in 2010, the farmer’s market at 1905 is popular among both expats and locals.

Reshma and Rastra Tuladhar are regulars at the Farmer’s Market and say that they buy their provisions for a whole week at the Saturday market. “We can find products here that are normally not available in the local tarkari bajar. Coming to the market has helped us expand our diet,” says Reshma. Rastra adds that the health benefits of the organic products are also important. “Since we started eating organic vegetables and fruits bought in the farmer’s market, I have felt healthier,” he says.

While most people come to the farmer’s market to stock up on organic goods, some come here for the ambience and to spend their Saturday mornings with friends and a nice meal. The variety of the products that the market offers makes it well worth a visit. Besides the healthy green vegetables, other delicacies including cheese, sausages, bread and even chocolates, all made in Nepal, are up for sale. An interesting mix of good quality and fresh produces from local farmers and entrepreneurs make this a favourite among organic lovers.
