Deadline extended, again

President Ram Baran Yadav has extended the deadline for five more days on Tuesday after the parties failed to forge consensus on forming an electoral government and asked for yet another extension.

Although UCPN(Maoist) chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal had said on Monday that the four major political parties were inching closer to an agreement to form a Sushil Koirala-led government, it did not find much traction with the Prime Minister. After Dahal’s efforts proved to be in vain, UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal tried to cajole the PM, but it was back to square one.

On Monday evening after the PM’s meeting with Nepal had ended, one of the PM’s secretaries sent text messages to journalists hinting that the PM, India, and the Madhesi parties were keen to prolong the tenure of the current government.

“I don’t think they want to come to consensus anytime before their party’s convention in February,” said Nepal speaking to Nepali Times on Tuesday. “I don’t know if it’s a dispute between the chairman and his deputy, or if they don’t want elections at all, or if they have devised this as their party’s policy.”

This is the fifth time the parties have asked for an extension since the President summoned the leaders of major political parties on 23 November giving them a week’s time to form a unity government.
