More than a dozen organisations that deal with caste issues are claiming that the Census Report 2001 published by the Central Department of Statistics has wiped out the identity of the Madhesi people. In a program organised to discuss weaknesses in the national statistics, held by the Maithili Literature Council, Saptari, participants pointed out inaccuracies. Newars are shown to be a majority in all of the VDCs of Saptari whereas they are actually a minority. Badrilal Maharjan, chairman of Newar Community Saptari, agrees that the census figures are wrong. The report also shows hill Brahmins as the majority in VDCs where none live and where tarai Brahmins are dominant. Speakers accused the government of a conspiracy to paint the Madhesi community as a minority and have formed a committee to lobby for corrections.
