Bumrungrad Hospital extends its heartfelt sympathies to the Lohani family. Losing a loved one is always difficult and we certainly understand Mr Jyoti Lohani's grief, ("No healer," Letters, #91). After carefully reviewing the case, it should be noted that Mr Lohani was suffering from advanced cancer and that his condition was indeed critical. As an internationally-accredited hospital, Bumgrungrad and its physicians have an obligation to inform patients before surgery of all potential outcomes, both positive and negative. This process is called "Informed Consent" and is intended to ensure that the patient is fully aware of all potential risks with major surgeries so they can make a fully-informed decision. Given the critical condition of the patient, the surgeon acted responsibly by informing Mr Lohani and his family of the risks involved.
Based on Mr Lohani's input, we have reminded our staff of the importance of advising and carefully explaining Informed Consent, a relatively new concept in Asia, to our patients.
