At least 90 people are confirmed dead due to the ongoing floods in the western Tarai districts of Banke and Bardiya. Thousands are still stranded and waiting for relief efforts to reach them. Rescue missions have been stalled due to weather conditions.
According to assistant acting chief district officer Narendra Raj Sharma of Banke, the army and police are currently trying to set up relief camps but health workers will only be able to start their work on Friday. Entire villages have been completely swept away leaving the inhabitants without any food or water. Incessant monsoon rains which began on Friday evening and continued to Sunday morning caused massive floods on the Rapti and Babai rivers inundating large parts of the western Tarai displacing thousands while causing massive landslides in hilly areas like Accham where at least ten people have died.
