After intense debates the House of Representatives (HoR) endorsed the government's programs and policies by majority votes for the fiscal year 2006-07 on Tuesday.
Rastriya Prajatrana Party (RRP) voted against the government's programs saying it did not include a clear roadmap to the establishment of peace and formation of an interim government within a year. Similarly, PFN's three MPs stayed out of the voting. However, the breakaway faction of the PFN led by the Chitra Bahadur KC, voted in favour of the government's programs and policies.
Heated debate reportedly took place between CPN (UML) and PFN leaders who criticized government's presented policies. UML's Raghuji Panta said the Front should "either vote for the programs and policies or quit altogether."
Deputy Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who had presented the government's programs and policies on behalf of Prime Minister GP Koirala assured that the government was committed to establishing peace and democracy in the country and implement the agreements reached between the seven parties and the Maoists. "The government has been very flexible in terms of talks, the Maoists should also respond by presenting themselves in the same way," Oli added.
Giving the peace process top priority, the government's programs and policies stressed on rural development, rehabilitation and reconstruction, special development programs for Karnali region and education quotas to girls.
