Maoist Supremo Prachanda, amid domestic and international criticisms, said his party's district unites have been directed not to operate people's courts in the capital and urban areas and to raise donations only on voluntary basis.
'Such acts will create room for suspicion on our party's commitment to peace,' the statement said justifying Prachanda's announcement. He also said that Nepal is going through crucial political changes, which is why it is the responsibility of every democratic Nepali to ensure peaceful constituent assembly elections.
According to Himalkhabar.com the latest statement by the Maoists comes after senior officials warned of action against the party if it continued extortion. Leader of Communist Party of India (Marxist), Sitraram Yechuri, during his meeting with Prachanda on Sunday, requested the Maoists to stop violent activities. Addressing the House of Representatives on Sunday, Home Minister Krishna Sitaula said that the continued extortion and abduction of civilians by the Maoists was blatant violation of the code of conduct signed by the government and the rebels last month.
In his statement, Prachanda also appealed the seven political parties, members of civil society, intelligentsia and international community to help implement the eight-point agreement between his party and the seven party alliance.
