Nepal\'s under-17 cricket team has been bowled out of the ICC Under-17 Asia Cup that was held in Pakistan last week.
Ten teams from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE, Singapore, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia took part in the tournament organised by the International Cricket Committee (ICC) to promote cricket in the lesser developed countries of Asia, including those where cricket has just taken root.
In the first game played between Kuwait and Nepal in Karachi, Nepal lost by 7 wickets. Nepal went in to bat first after winning the toss. But they were all out in 28.3 overs, having scored a total of 79 runs which Kuwait easily bettered in 26.3 overs, losing only three wickets.
The second day proved luckier for the disheartened Nepali team. Winning the toss again, the Nepal team wisely decided to field first. The opposing team from Bahrain disastrously lost 7 wickets for 32 runs in 19 overs. No batsman other than Rizwan Abdul Ghani was able to score more then 5 runs.
Ghani was run out after scoring a much-needed 15 runs. Bahrain lost all wickets for a measly 42 runs in 23.4 overs. Monik Shrestha and Prakash Sharma held off the Bahrain bowling until Prakash was bowled out. Then Prem Chaudhary joined Shrestha and carried the team to an easy victory of 44 for 1 in 10.1 overs.
The third game with Bangladesh proved to be a humiliation for the inexperienced Nepalis. Bangladeshi Mohammad Ashraful proved too stubborn to be bowled out and continued pushing ahead although the Nepalis used everything in their power. Ashraful was finally run out after scoring an inexhaustible 102 runs in 131 balls.
Bangladesh ended the game with an almost unreachable total of 225 runs with only four wickets lost. Faced with a target of 226 runs the Nepali team didn\'t make a good start. They lost both openers Monik Shrestha and Sagar Pant within the 18th run. By the first 20 overs Nepal had already lost 4 wickets with only 41 runs to their credit. And within the next 20 overs the whole team was out for 82 runs.
It wasn\'t over yet for Nepal. In the next game with Pakistan, the Nepali team batted first but couldn\'t get off the ground. Four wickets were sacrificed with only 14 runs.
The Pakistani bowling had the entire Nepali squad out within 28.5 overs for just 67 runs. The only noteworthy play came from Amir. Shrestha, who faced 58 balls to score a hope-raising 23 which included two fours. The Pakistanis performed stunningly, and reached the target of 69 within 15 overs for no loss of wicket.
