Tibetan voices on canvas
Spanish artist Andrea Lopez Iglesias' exhibition The New Faces of Tibet embodies her desire to give voice to displaced Tibetans. The exhibition consists of 14 large paintings and smaller ones made in watercolour and monotype. Iglesias uses bold storks and vibrant colours to depict Tibetan children whom she met and bonded with during her stay at Pema T'sal Monastery in Pokhara. The project is a continuation of her previous work 'Visited Places. Children Remembered' in which she focused on children in orphanages, and comes at a time when the Free Tibet movement is growing strong in the subcontinent. "What comes through these portraits is a stoic and resilient people, who have retained their innocence, faith and culture despite the harsh reality of their situation. More importantly Andrea's works are an impassioned plea to humanity itself," says Sangeeta Thapa, director at Siddhartha Art Gallery in praise of Iglesias' paintings.
