Madhab Kumar Nepal, CPN (UML)'s general secretary said that the recent statements in favour of monarchy were made to appease the king.
Talking to his party cadres at an event in Bara, Nepal said that the parliament is against ceremonial monarchy. He added that the best means of deciding the fate of Nepal's monarchy is through a referendum.
"The king has no role in new Nepal," Nepal said requesting the king to respect people's wishes, "The people will decide if they want to keep monarchy and the king must respect their verdict, otherwise he will not be allowed to stay in the country."
Prime Minister GP Koirala a few weeks earlier said that the King should be given some space in democracy "to avoid political confrontation". The recently concluded 12th central committee meeting of the UML endorsed the idea of referendum to decide the fate of monarchy.
