Demonstrations started early on Saturday in Kathmandu and other major cities against Friday's government decision to increase the prices of petroleum products.

Students and general public took out protest rallies, burnt tiers and blocked roads in Lainchaur, Sorakhutte, Gaushala, Chabhil, Balkhu, Kalanki, Maharajganj, Kupondole and Kalimati. According to Himalkhabar.com the protestors vandalized a gas station in Maitidebi, and damaged private and public vehicles.

Protests in front of Amrit Science Campus on Saturday morning obstructed traffic for over three hours. Protest spread eventually to rest of Kathmandu when taxi drivers joined in and blocked traffic near Soaltee Hotel and Baneswor. Various student groups issued a statement on Saturday calling for nationwide protests until government withdraws its decision.

As the reports of demonstrations spreading to other parts of the country started pouring in Nepali Congress, Nepal Workers and Peasants Party, Rastriya Prajatantra Party and Consumer's Forum also came out to condemn government's decision.

After Friday's increase, the retail price of petrol shot up to Rs 84.25 per litre, diesel Rs 59.08, and kerosene Rs 59.21 per litre. The price of the subsidized kerosene is fixed at Rs 52.41 per litre. Similarly, the retail price of the cooking gas is fixed at Rs 1,000 per cylinder. The government increased prices of petroleum products on Friday saying they were compelled to do so in order to minimize the losses incurred by Nepal Oil Corporation.
