Talks tomorrow



Unconfirmed reports from Maoist sources say the much awaited talks between the Seven Party Alliance (SPA) government and the CPN-Maoists will begin in Kathmandu tomorrow, 26 May. The time and venue of the talks have not been made public, however sources say there will be another round of talks outside the capital after this.

There has been a positive build up towards dialogue after the government released all political prisoners and announced its team led by the Home Minister Krishna Sitaula that will include Minister for Local Development Pradeep Gyawali and State Minister for Labour and Transport Ramesh Lekhak. Coordinator of the Maoist team Krishna Bahadur Mahara and member Dinanath Sharma arrived in Kathmandu on Sunday while another member of the team Dev Gurung arrived in the capital on Thursday evening. The first round of talks will be centred around the code of conduct during the ongoing ceasefire.

Meanwhile the Maoist team held separate meetings with leaders of the SPA on Thursday in their respective offices. Mahara and Sharma met with Nepali Congress (Democratic) president and former Sher Bahadur Deuba, Nepal Peasant Workers Party chairman Narayan Man Bijukchhe and leaders of Nepal Sadbhawana Party (Anandadebi). Mahara has expressed his dissatisfaction with Deuba after the NC-D president reportedly expressed his opinion that if the king was willing to stay without power there was no need to throw him away.
