Top UN official to visit Nepal

Senior Political Affairs Officer Tamrat Samuel of the UN's Department of Political affairs has left for Kathmandu on an official visit. According to the UN news centre, Tamrat will review the situation and help build on positive developments towards a negotiated solution to the country's crisis. UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan had been calling for the restoration of democratic freedoms and institutions ever since the king dissolved parliament, imposed a state of emergency and suspended civil liberties in February 2005.

Meanwhile the House of Representatives on Thursday passed resolutions asking the government to form a high-level judicial commission to initiate immediate action against those involved in suppressing the People\'s Movement. Home Minister Krishna Sitaula gave assurances that the government would take action against those responsible for the brutal suppression of the Peoples Movement and the resulting deaths of pro-democracy activists. UML MP Rajendra Pandey called for action against vice-chairman of the former Council of Ministers Dr Tulsi Giri, Kamal Thapa, Shrish Shumshere Rana, Nepal Police chief Shyam Bhakta Thapa, high-ranking police officials Durja Kumar Rai, Madhav Thapa, Devi Ram Thapa and Shahabir Thapa. He also urged the government to seize their passports so that they cannot flee the country.

The House passed the motion to not take allowances for the last four years when the Parliament had remained dissolved, which adds Rs 363 million to the state treasury (every MP contributed Rs 1.27 million). The House also passed a separate motion that the MPs would provide their daily allowances of the ongoing session for the treatment of those injured in course of People\'s Movement.
