Peaceful protests turns violent



The second day of four day long protests called by the seven party alliance ended today with violent clashes between demonstrators and police taking place in various parts of the country and especially in Kathmandu Valley. Party activists and student unions also demonstrated in Pokhara, Biratnagar, Butwal, Janakpur, Hetauda, and Chitwan.

Several locations within the Valley including Ason, Tyaud, Balaju, Maitidevi, Gongabu, Thamel, Kalanki, Thahiti and Basundhara saw protests at various hours of the day. In Patan where demonstrators gathered from early in the morning, the Lalitpur District Post Office building was ransacked by the agitators. The police used dozens of rounds of teargas shots to disperse the crowd.

In the Tribhuvan University campus in Kirtipur where the agitation was particularly violent the protest lasted all day. Students numbering in hundreds destroyed a statue of King Gyanendra's grandmother, which stood in front of the Vice Chancellors Office. Nearly a dozen students and a few policemen were injured during the clashes. Demonstrators also severely beat up a plainclothes policeman. Three students were severely beaten by the police who entered the Girls Hostel.

Arrests have been made from various location in the capital however exact figures are not known. Arrests were made in New Road, Kalanki and Chabahil after protestors defied prohibitory orders. CPN-UML leaders Astalaxmi Shakya, Krishna Gopal Shrestha, Rabindra Adhikari, Yogendra Sangraula, Govinda Koirala were among those arrested today.
