For the last two weeks, the Epidemiology and Disease Control unit of the Health Department have been unable to supply anti-rabies vaccines to the District Hospital in Jaleswor. Last month alone, 2,500ml of vaccine were supplied but the hospital ran out after treating over 60 cases of dog bite. The unavailability of the vaccine has forced many Nepalis to spend large amounts of money traveling across the border to India for treatment. About 10-15 Nepalis with dog bites visit the hospital everyday, only to be deprived of treatment due to a shortage of medicine. Local health workers point out that the district hospital gives free treatment to Nepali as well as Indian patients, who come from across the border for free medicines.
