The nearly seven-year-old Maoist insurgency has claimed over 7,000 lives. According to the Royal Nepal Army and the Home Ministry, this breaks down into: 6,011 Maoist rebels, 873 policemen, 219 soldiers, 97 armed policemen and 773 civilians including political workers. Of these, 4,050 Maoists have been killed since the proclamation of the state of emergency last November.
