I read the opinion piece by Dr Ram Sharan Mahat ("Cheques and balances", #100) and then Sagar SJB Rana's rebuttal ("Deuba was given no choice", #101) and I was impressed with the legal sophistication both used to justify their positions. Both are honest, committed politicians who should be able to rise above petty quarrels within their party. However, Dr Mahat and Mr Rana both show that they cannot. And therein lies the tragedy of the Nepali Congress, which is also the tragedy of this country. Namely, no one can see beyond their own narrow self-interest.
