Doctor Govinda KC broke his fast on Friday morning after authorities agreed to address his demands for improving the Institute of Medicine. Consequently, the Nepal Medical Association also called off their strike and resumed medical service.
Officials agreed to appoint deans on the basis of seniority, grant autonomy to the IOM, and to cancel the illegal registration of medical institutions, among other agreements.
Speaking before he was admitted to the Teaching Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, KC said he fought this battle for truth and justice.
“I was forced to make this gesture not because I wanted to be a hero but because I felt someone needed put a spotlight on the medical mafia who run unchecked under political conservation,” stated a letter read out on KC’s behalf. “I am sorry patients had to suffer during the last two weeks, and I must thank my colleagues, students, media and the public for saving my life and committing themselves to justice.”
KC had been on hunger strike since 11 Jan to protest against political appointments and corruption in the medical sector. He began his fast after the previous dean Prakash Sayami resigned because four medical institutions were illegally granted licenses.
