Occupy Baluwatar campaigners commemorated one year of the 107 day long campaign today which was organised to protest against rising incidents of violence against women and the government’s apathy towards proper investigation.

The campaigners met Khil Raj Regmi,  Chairman of Interim Election Council on Thursday to bring attention to the various cases of violence against women that Occupy Baluwatar had raised last year. Although Chairman Regmi appreciated the campaign’s objective and the need to punish the culprits, victims’ families returned disappointed. “Our mother (Chhori Maiya Maharjan) has been missing for the last two years and we still don’t know how long our wait for justice is going to be,” said Sudha Maharjan.

Similarly family members of Sita, the migrant worker who was robbed and raped by airport officials last year expressed dissatisfaction over court proceedings and concerned bodies’ continuing apathy towards the case investigation.

“Where is the justice for my daughter?” asked Dataram whose daughter Sita was robbed and raped by airport officials after returning from Saudi Arabiya last year. The Kathmandu District Court last week ordered one year sentence to police constable Parshuram Basnet and non-gazzetted officer SomnathKhanal charging them of robbing and sexually exploiting the 21 year old migrant worker. However, the court acquitted section officers from the immigration department Tikaram Pokharel and Ram Prasad Koirala. Said Dataram: “How long can we sustain our fighting spirit if the culprits are given lenient sentence even in the presence of strong evidence.”
