There will be 601 members in the next Constituent Assembly.

President Ram Baran Yadav amended the constitution after the government recommended him to sign an ordinance on the grounds of “removing constitutional hurdles to the elections.”

This comes after talks over elections between the HLPC and the CPN-M broke down on Monday after the latter demanded a change in the government and postponement of polls. On Tuesday they advised the government to take all necessary legal steps to ensure an election in November.

Although the four major political parties had agreed three months ago on 491 CA members, they convinced Ashok Rai and Upendra Yadav’s coalitions to take part in the polls by promising to keep the CA as large as the one elected in 2008.
