Countdown to midnight

Sunday, May 27th, 2012
..................................................................................................................

With only two hours to go until the CA deadline expires, it seems unlikely that the constitution will be declared tonight.

“It will not be possible to declare the constitution by the deadline,” said Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal as he emerged from hours of meeting of the major parties in Singha Darbar.

The parties are now discussing on two alternatives as the CA dissolves at midnight. There is a possibility that emergency will be declared in order to extend the CA’s tenure tonight. Parties are also discussing the possibility of fresh elections if the CA dissolves. Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai is expected to address the nation before the night ends, and clear the state of confusion.

Meanwhile, CA members, who had no chance to sit for a meeting today, were chanting slogans against the CA’s imminent dissolution. Chanting has also been going on all day outside the CA building, with various groups stationed on the road, making demands against and for ethnicity based federalism.
