The Supreme Court has issued an interim order to the government to not implement its decision to start group entry of Madhesi communities in the Nepal Army (NA) on Moday.
A single bench of Justice Baijanath Upadhyay issued the stay order after conducting a hearing on the writ petition filed by Chure Bhawar Rastriya Party, a fringe party in the legislature parliament.
The writ demanded that the SC order the government to withdraw the decision, reasoning that induction of people from certain ethnicity deprives people from other ethnicity of the right to join the armed forces. The move will divide the national army along ethnic lines.
The cabinet had on December 20 decided to start recruitment of 3000 youths from different Madhesi communities including Dalits, Terai Janjatis, Muslims and other communities of the region to form a separate battalion in Nepal Army.
