The number of Nepali citizens registering themselves as voters under the new voter registration program initiated by the Election Commission has reached 8,822,251 as of 16 June.
The voter registration along with a photograph and fingerprint had begun from some selected VDCs in Solukhumbu, Kathmandu, Rupandehi, Dang and Dadeldhura districts.
This was followed by the programs being organised in the municipality. Of the 58 municipalities, the registration is yet to be done in Taulihawa and Nepalgunj municipalities.
Likewise, of the 3,915 VDCs, voter registration has been completed in 3,517 VDCs.
Meanwhile, the Commission has also begun registering the people, who are living in places other than their home districts.
Considering the pressure of voters in Kathmandu valley, a provision has been made for eligible voters to register themselves in the District Administration Offices and the Foreign Ministry premises until 16 November.
In Kathmandu, voter registration facilities are available in the Ward Offices from Ward No. 1 to 11 and from 32 to 35 until 31 July.
The Government is also planning to develop a National Identity Card using the details provided during the voter registration.
Voter registration shall however continue in the District Election Offices across the county in order to ensure that no eligible voter is left out of the enlisting process.
