The Special Court on Tuesday has released Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Nepal Police, Tapendra Dhwaj Hamal, who was in judicial custody for his alleged involvement in the Sudan scam, on general date without demanding bail. At present, Hamal is suspended from his post.

According to Court registrar Dheer Bahadur Chand, DIG Hamal has been asked to present himself before the court when summoned.

The Court has demanded a bail of Rs 7.5 million and Rs 4 million from former DIG Deep Kumar Shrestha and suspended SSP Sanjay Singh Basnet, others accused in the scam, respectively. The duo has been sent to the Dillibazaar jail after they failed to post the bail amount as sought by the Court, according to Chand.

Former DIG Rabindra Pratap Rana and former SSP Niraj Pun have been kept in judicial custody at the Singha Durbar Ward Police Office after the hearings in the graft cases were not completed on Tuesday.

The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has filed a case against 34 incumbent and retired police officers and two suppliers at the Special Court, implicating them for misusing around Rs. 290 million in the purchase of the Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) and other logistics for the Nepal Police personnel deputed in Sudan under the United Nations peace keeping mission.

The Court has also remanded Shambhu Bharati, a local agent of the London-based Assured Risks Pvt. Ltd awarded with the contract for supplying the APCs to the Nepali peace keeping mission in Sudan, after hearings in the case were not over on Tuesday, said Chand.
