The deadline for census collection has been extended by five days.

The Census 2011, launched on 17 June by Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), was supposed to conclude on Monday. However, the enumerators are yet to complete the counting, and the deadline has been extended to 2 July.

CBS Director General Uttam Narayan Malla said that 95 per cent of census work is complete in hill areas and 90 percent in urban areas.

Once counting is complete, data collection will be re-checked in two months and preliminary details will be made public by the mid-October.

CBS estimates Nepal’s population to increase by 2.13 percent compared to Census 2001.

Questionnaires were prepared in 10 languages—Maithili, Bhojpuri, Tharu, Tamang, Gurung, Newari, Magar, Awadhi, Rai and Limbu—this time.  Two types of questionnaires, one for household and the other for individual information are being used.

CBS has deployed 46,500 enumerators, including 8,500 supervisors, across the country for the population and household census.
