The CA meeting that was adjourned for 15 minutes at 11.45pm, has not been convened since. It is almost three in the morning and the nation is now under a undeclared state of statelessness. The three major parties had reportedly reached a consensus on extending the CA tenure by six months with a target of completing the peace process within three months. Accordingly, the government also tabled the extension proposal. But the political posturing of the CPN–UML, which tabled its central committee decision during the three party meet has become a major obstruction in the process. On the other hand, the Madhesi parties have been obstinate with their own demand.
The political parties are using the tenure extension as an opportunity to coerce each other into political give and takes. This not only exposes their irresponsibility but shows their utter disregard for the nation. It is disappointing to see the parties and their leaders claiming their political stakes at the cost of dragging the nation towards an uncertainty. What will happen if the CA tenure is not extended? Let us not dwell on that question because the answer is as uncertain as the possibilities are. In the meantime, all that this nation can hope for is that this nightmare is over before it turns into an ugly reality.
It does not need an Einstein brain for our esteemed leaders to understand that they can continue with their political score-keeping only as long as they have a political platform and failing to extend the CA means that they will lose all the grounds.
