Maoist plenum concludes

he sixth extended plenum of the UCPN (Maoist) concluded on Saturday without the resolution of the intra-party dispute.

A seven-day long plenum discussed the three separate political papers presented by Party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and vice chairmen Mohan Baidya and Baburam Bhattarai, but failed to come up with a single official party line.

Dahal had presented an integrated document incorporating all three papers, but vice chairmen Baidya and Bhattarai could not agree on it. The plenum then entrusted the task of finalising the paper to the central committee during their upcoming meeting.

The three leaders appeared together at a press conference at the end of the plenum to make public their decision. Dahal reiterated, however, his stance that the ultimate goal would be a people’s revolt, using short-term tactics such as peace and the constitution. “The party will go for revolt if attempts are made to obstruct the peace process and constitution drafting,” he said.
