Nepal has pinned its hopes on winning in the martial arts category although India seems set on dominating most sports in the event. Even before the opening ceremony has taken place, we have received news that seven Nepali players have been injured. From Nepalnews:
At least seven Nepali players including an official were injured in a hotel lift collapse in Bangladeshi capital Dhaka where they recently arrived to participate in the 11th South Asian Games (SAG) on Friday.
They were injured after the elevator they had taken suddenly broke down and fell rapidly from the fourth floor of the Imperial Hotel which is located nearby the Bangabandhu National Stadium where the grand ceremony to officially kick off the eight nations sport extravaganza is taking place today.
At home, the parliament has endorsed a bill for a constitution amendment to reinstate Vice President Parmananda Jha. From the Kathmandu Post:
The Legislature-Parliament has endorsed the bill tabled for the Seventh Amendment to the Interim Constitution with a two-third majority paving the way for the reactivation of “duties and responsibilities’ of Parmananda Jha as the country’s vice president.
Jha’s authority as vice president was deactivated last August through a Supreme Court order that said Jha’s Hindi oath was not in line with the Interim Constitution. Though the court had given him a change to retake oath in Nepali and keep intact his position, Jha had refused.
Deputy Prime Minister Sujata Koirala is facing heat over her personal secretary’s involvement in a passport fraud case. On Thursday, it had been reported that her secretary, Bharat Sapkota had helped issue Nepali passports to some Afghan nationals. Republica reports:
Deputy Prime Miniser ad Minister of Foreign Affairs Sujata Koirala has asked hOme Minister Bhim Rawal and Home Secretary Dr Govind Kusum to probe an allegation of fraud against her chief personal secretary, Bharat Sapkota.
Earlier, she had fired Sapkota following publication of news reports about him, said a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The news reports accused Sapkota of raising millions of rupees from people promising them of oversees jobs.
In Rautahat, a man murdered his wife because she couldn’t pay him Rs. 5,000 as was promised during their wedding. The Kathmandu Post writes:
A man allegedly murdered his wife in the district’s Santapur VDC over a dowry row on Wednesday night.
Sah was promised Rs. 15,000as dowry when he tied the nuptial know with Manjudevi four years ago. However, the bride’s parents could not provide him Rs. 5,000 due to poor economic conditions.
