"Manage Maoist arms first"

Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala said that the dissolution of the present parliament and formation of the interim government would not begin until the Maoists arms are managed.

Talking to reporters in Biratnagar on Wednesday, Koirala said that the parliament is the only weapon the seven parties have against the Maoist so it would be wrong to dissolve it until a decision is made about the Maoists' arms. He added that the Maoists would get a seat in the interim government only after the decision is made.

"Weapons management is a more important than forming an interim constitution or an interim parliament," Koirala said. Reiterating his commitment to the peace process and assured that the process of arms management would begin after consultation with the United Nations team, which is due arrive within two-three weeks.

Koirala's statement comes in just after Maoists supremo Prachanda's Sunday statement where he said that the Maoists had no plans to disarm before the constituent assembly elections.
