Nepali imprisoned for life in Japan

A Japanese High Court overturned a lower court decision and sentenced Govinda Prasad Mainali, 34, to life in prison. In April the Tokyo District Court acquitted Mainali for lack of evidence, but prosecutors challenged the ruling and Mainali remained in detention-something the Kyodo News Agency says wouldn't have happened to a Japanese suspect. Mainali is accused of murdering 39 year-old Yasuko Watanabe, a female employee of the Tokyo Electric Power Company in March 1997. Mainali, who went to Japan in 1994 and was working at a restaurant, says he is innocent. "I did not do it. Oh God, please help me," he screamed in Japanese after hearing the verdict, reports from Tokyo say. His lawyers say they will appeal the decision in the Supreme Court.
