Nepal Army has announced scholarship to 17-month-old Sonish Awal, who was rescued from underneath the rubble of a house after being buried for 22 hours during the earthquake exactly a year ago.

At an event to commemorate the first anniversary of the earthquake on Sunday, the army said it will bear the education cost of Sonish up to fifth grade at any school chosen by his family. After the fifth grade, he will be enrolled in the army-run Sainik Awasiya Mahavidyalaya up to diploma level.

Sonish was five-month-old when he was buried under the debris of his own house. The army had rescued him alive the next day, and photographs of his rescue went viral, and was featured on the folded cover of the 1-7 May edition of Nepali Times the week after the earthquake.
