Naya Patrika, 23 December

Smuggling of petrol and diesel has eased the fuel crisis in Nepal, but people are still struggling to get a cylinder of cooking gas while suppliers are giving gas to Kathmandu-based embassies.

A riot broke out in Kirtipur this week when police tried to control distribution of gas cylinders. Rioters even looted a loaded revolver from DSP Tika KC. The shortage of gas has not spared diplomatic missions, which are writing to Nepal LP Gas Industry Association requesting supplies.

“We are giving a priority to diplomatic missions and hospitals,” said the association’s President Shiva Prasad Ghimire. “But there just aren’t enough cylinders.”

The shortage is due to a blockade imposed by India, but it is the Indian Embassy that has demanded more gas cylinders than any other diplomatic mission. The embassy recently wrote to the association asking for as many as 200 gas cylinders when others were asking for at the most 30 cylinders.  The association has so far provided only 16 gas cylinders to the Indian embassy, promising to give more in the weeks to come.

Embassies of the UK, Pakistan and Germany have demanded 150,105 and 50 gas cylinders. Embassies of Saudi Arabia, Japan, South Korea, France, Sri Lanka, Norway, Bangladesh, Australia, Sweden and Denmark have requested for 20-30 cylinders. But embassies of Malaysia, Thailand, Qatar, Myanmar, Egypt and Brazil have asked for less than 20 cylinders.
