Landslides block roads

..................................................................................................................

Landslides triggered by Wednesday night’s heavy rain have blocked roads in several parts of the country.

Landslides have blocked the Araniko Highway in at least three places between Barhabise and Tatopani in Sindhupalchok district. The road was blocked for about two months following the April earthquake. Kathmandu’s traders took initiative to reopen it briefly to bring their consignments stuck in Tatopani. But the road got stuck again by more landsides.

District Police Office, Sindhupalchok’s inspector Raj Kumar Thapa said they have sought Chinese police’s help to reopen the road, which is an artery for Kathmandu-Khasa trade.

Another landslide triggered by incessant rain has blocked Hetauda-Kulekhani road, diverting more than 700 jeeps ply along the Tribhuvan Highway.

Makwanpur’s Chief District Office Ram Prasad Thapaliya said efforts are underway to clear the road. But if it rains the road will not reopen soon, according to him.

In the east, the road connecting Ilam’s Ranke to Ravi bazaar has been blocked for almost one month now. The locals from around two dozen VDCs of Ilam and Panchthar have been forced to walk for two days to reach the nearest town due to the road blockade.

Meteorological Forecasting Division (MFD) has recorded heavy rains in Pokhara, Nepalgunj, Dhangadhi, Bhairahawa and Kathmandu Wednesday night. Rains have not only brought landslides but also flooded dozens of towns and villages in Banke, Bardiya and Kailali districts.

In Pokhara where the MFD recorded 224 mm rains, a landslide buried a school class room when students were writing their exam on Thursday. One student was killed and five injured in the incident.

A few tall buildings badly designed have failed in urban Kathmandu Valley and that has creatyed so much uproar and heart burnings and name calling ; and that is understandable. Why not/ But negative thoughts should now be over. Let us think in the positive terms. Salvage what you can. Regularize what is possible in positive way.
Let us stop our dogs shitting on the footpath and in front of our neighbor.s gate. Let the footpath be constructed for the pedestrian,s comfort . No sudden falls . Give curves and slopes when allowing the access to the house owners.

Compare to the havoc that the landslides will be creating the urban loss is not that high.
THE GREATEST SOURCE OF LANDSLIDES WHICH CANNOT BE CONTROLLED FOR AGES ARE , THE THAT HAVE OPENED/ SCRATCHED THE EARTH FOR MONSOON RAINS TO PERCOLATE . THE RESULT WILL BE DEVASTATION FOR YEARS TO COME IN VARIOUS WAYS. the RESULT WILL BE MORE EARTH MOVING TO THE BAY OF Bengal , AN ISLAND CONTRIBUTION FROM Himalayan height.
