An unknown disease that has killed 14 people so far in rural villages of Jajarkot district could be Swine Flu, according to health officials.

A test conducted by National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL) found H1N1 virus, also known as Swine Flu, in three of 12 samples of saliva collected by a team of experts from the patients. The NPHL revealed the test result on Tuesday.

Baburam Marasini, Director of the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD), said: “As nine samples tested negative for H1N1 virus, we need to conduct more tests. Without further tests, we cannot say if it is just Swine Flu or other diseases could also be there.”

The flu-like like disease that has affected hundreds of people in Paink, Archhani, Sakala, Dandagaun and Paraju of Jajarkot district had first killed a 20-year-old girl last month. Sushmita Jaishi, a tenth grader, had complained of fever and flu before dying.

The death toll from the disease has reached 14 so far. However, local health officials say some of the deceased had been suffering from other diseases like tuberculosis, asthma and high blood pressure.

“As reported by the media, all deaths might not have been caused by the same disease,” said Krishna Khatri, a lab technician at the District Public Health Office, Jajarkot. “Some of the deceased had other complications.”

After the death toll from the flu-like diseased reached 11, three separate teams of health personnel, including one from World Health Organisation (WHO), had reached Jajarkot.

A woman infected with Swine Flu had died at Model Hospital last month on 1 March, prompting health officials to take cautions.
