Nepal’s only contender at the Sochi Winter Olympics Dachhiri Sherpa is set to play today in the 15 km Men’s Cross Country event scheduled for Friday at 3:45 pm NST.

NOC General Secretary Shrestha said Dachhiri was selected as per his performance in various events organised by International Ski Federation (FIS). “There was no selection event for Winter Olympics. He had participated in the FIS organised events and was selected on his performance,” said Shrestha, President of Nepal Ski Association. “We have hired a French coach and helped him through Olympic Solidarity Course.”

Sherpa, 44, is going to his third Winter Olympics. He was 94th out of 96 finishers and 92nd out of 95, respectively, in the 15km at the 2006 and 2010 Olympics. This will be his final game. “I think there is a very big chance I will finish last,” Sherpa had said in an interview two weeks ago.

“The placing is not important if I can teach young people in Nepal about the Olympic spirit. This spirit is in my heart.” Sherpa is the third Nepalese Winter Olympian.

Jay Khadka skied cross-country in 2002, and Tejbir Bura won an Olympic gold medal in Mixed Alpinism at the first Winter Games in Chamonix, France, in 1924. NOC President Dhruba Bahadur Pradhan and General Secretary Jeevan Ram Shrestha, joint General Secretary Lama Tendi Sherpa, Aani Jacqueline Sherpa , Bijaya Shrestha, Dhananjaya Shrestha and Ram Awale are representing Nepal in Sochi.
