President Ram Baran Yadav has declined two ordinances related to elections forwarded by the government, stating that they were neither relevant nor satisfactory. The move is being seen by many as his overt stance that issuing unilateral ordinances is against the spirit of democracy. This is the first time the President refused to sign an ordinance recommended by the cabinet.

Rajendra Dahal, the President’s press advisor told Nepali Times that the President would reject all ordinances forwarded by the government
unless they were the result of wider political consensus. Meanwhile, Prime Minister’s press advisor Devendra Paudel has said that it was an unconstitutional behaviour of the President to reject ordinance forwarded by the cabinet. Poudel also defended government’s actions and reiterated that the ordinances will be resent to the President’s office and that he has no alternative but to endorse the same.
