The Special Committee has unveiled a tentative action plan to bid farewell to the combatants opting voluntary retirement package within three weeks.

The committee meeting on Sunday presided over by Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai decided to begin the process within a week, beginning Monday.

The combatants who have opted for voluntary retirement will be given the agreed amount while those opting rehabilitation would be handed over to the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction.

Over 7,000 Maoist combatants opted for voluntary retirement during the recent categorisation conducted by the Special Committee. Only six combatants opted for rehabilitation package. The committee aims to complete the rehabilitation and voluntary retirement at first phase and then the integration of the combatants will take place in the next round.

The committee has also directed the government to ask the Nepal Army to make necessary preparations for integration of the combatants who have opted for integration. The prime minister will hold a meeting of the Special Committee members and the Nepal Army officials soon as to move the process of integration.

The government will give half of their money before they leave the cantonments and the remaining will be paid in the next fiscal year. As per the 1 November peace deal, voluntarily retiring combatants will be paid from Rs 500,000 to Rs 800,000, depending upon their rank in the Maoist army.

The process was delayed after the UCPN (Maoist) pushed for endorsing an action plan without fixing the date while the leaders of opposition parties had demanded a time-bound schedule to move the process.
