Bista sets a record

deepak bista winning goldTaekwondo player Deepak Bista set a new record on Monday by winning the gold medal in the fourth consecutive South Asian Games.

Bista defeated Bhutan’s Tashi in under-87kg final 6-1 on Monday becoming the first Nepali to set such a record. He is also the first South Asian player to have won gold medals in four consecutive South Asian Games.

Nepal’s marathon runner Baikunhta Manandhar had held the record by winning gold medals in three consecutive SAG.

After his record-breaking performance, Bista said that he was happy about the unexpected victory even though he had sustained knee injuries.

“My victory has conveyed the message that hard work and dedication can result in success,” Bista said.

In women’s taekwondo event, Ayesha Shakya also won gold medal beating Latika Bahandari of India 5-1 in  the final of under-53kg category. Shakya was silver medalist in 10th SAG.

Nepal had also expected to win a gold medal under-57kg category of women’s taekwondo in which 10th SAG Manita Shahi was participating. She was beaten in the final by Sri Lankan Fatima Keshia Suhail.

Nepal won two gold medals in karate. In 75kg category, Binod Shakya defeated Sri Lankan player to win the gold and Ganga Adhikari won another gold in women’s 61kg category defeating Afghanistani player in the final.

Aang Baau Lama also won a gold medal in wushu men’s taijiquan and taijijian all round event. Nepal has seven gold medals so far.

In boxing, Nepal’s Ajit Gurung won a silver after he was beaten by host Bangladeshi boxer Mohammad Jewel Ahamed Jony in the final of 60kg lightweight.

In women’s  football final, Nepal lost to India 1-3 in Kamalapur of Dhaka.
