The Swasthani brata katha festival is a month-long festival dedicated to God Madhav Narayan and Goddess Swasthani. The festival revolves around the Swasthani, a text with stories from the Puranic tradition. The book has creation myths, stories about Parvati’s devotion to Shiva, and about the marriage of a girl-child, Goma Brahmani, to Shiva disguised as an ageing man. The devotees recite one chapter daily from the 31-chapter sacred book as they fast for the well-being of their family.
