Rebuilding the rain god’s chariot

Tuesday, July 28th, 2015

The tall wooden chariot of Rato Machhindranath is now being dismantled. The chariot was on its way from Bungamati to Patan on a more-important-than-usual 12-year commemoration of the annual festival when the 25 April earthquake struck. The chariot tilted and got stuck in the township of Chyasikot for more than three months. Guthi Sansthan has finally decided to rebuild it. The chariot-pulling procession halted by the earthquake will resume when it is rebuilt.
